Placencia Village
Central Belize
If you are interested in taking the family to a truly unique and comfortable tropical destination but are not interested in compromising your opportunity to go fishing, you should consider The Inn at Robert’s Grove just north of Placencia Village in south-central Belize. What Victoria House is to Ambergris Caye to the north, Robert’s Grove is Southern Belize’s equivalent that offers a comparable resort-like atmosphere which caters to idle beach loving sun worshipers, outdoor enthusiasts, divers, casual fishermen, and of course the most hard-core fly-rodders. The majority of the groups we send to Robert’s Grove are anglers with their non-angling family or spouses in tow. The most beautiful beach in all of Belize is in front of the facility, and the number of organized non-angling activities / eco-tours in the area is staggering. It is the perfect operation for any group type wanting to experience a large sampling of ‘everything Belize’, or just looking for a relaxing tropical getaway.
The Inn at Robert’s Grove also operates its very own full service, one acre, private island ten miles offshore from the resort called Robert’s Caye. This is a unique choice for couples or more intensive anglers looking for romance, total solitude, or to simply be closer to the fishing. (See Accommodation Description for more details)
The Placencia area is best known for its epic permit fishery. The vast expanse of open water turtle-grass flats between the mainland and the barrier reef some fifteen miles offshore are home to some of the world’s greatest skinny water, wade-friendly, permit fishing opportunities. The area also has several mangrove lined lagoons where tarpon in the 15 – 60 pound range that are typically very reliable and consistent. The mainland also offers many backcountry areas including creeks are rivers that are home to excellent tarpon and snook fishing. Of course there are plenty of bonefish in the area for those looking to round-out the grand slam for the day, or if you want to introduce a novice angler to the sport.
The Placencia fishery is incredibly dynamic and offers up a diverse venue for all types of angling style of preference. Although the locale is world-renown for the technical permit fishing, anglers of all degrees of experience can have a ball fishing out of Robert’s Grove. In addition to bonefish, permit, tarpon, and snook, there are over a dozen other species to chase with a fly-rod or with conventional spinning gear (including barracuda, jacks, snapper, yellow-tail, bonita), and inexperienced novices will nearly always enjoy some success.
Unlike your usual “fishing lodge”, The Inn at Robert’s Grove offers all the amenities found at a fine upscale tropical resort. There are several differing styles of rooming accommodation from the standard rooms to the five hundred square foot “Grand Villa Suites”. Every room on the twenty-two acre complex is constructed of tropical hardwoods, and is equipped with air conditioning, cable TV, a telephone, private bath, and is very tastefully decorated.
The resort offers three freshwater swimming pools, a tennis court, fitness room, rooftop Jacuzzis, and the beautiful ‘Sea-Spa’ which facilitates every type of massage and body treatment found at the most luxurious of health spas. The Caribbean Sea and the beautiful white beaches loaded with beach furniture in front of the Inn are never more than a one minute walk, and the resort has two excellent restaurants on site for their guests.
Private Island Accommodation on ‘Robert’s Caye’:
“If you didn’t know better, you’d think you’d landed in Bora Bora.” Robert’s Caye, a 1 acre island, is just 10 miles from Placencia (1/2 hour by boat), with four tastefully appointed thatch roofed cabanas built partially over the water. Each cabana is outfitted with a king bed (or twins), full bathroom with hot and cold running showers, and a private terrace with hammocks and stairs that descend directly into the Caribbean.
A small restaurant and bar, also built over the water, serves three meals daily – or on a private cabana terrace if preferred. An ideal setting for honeymooners and sportsmen alike, this “swept away” island paradise is surrounded by crystal clear water, ideal for swimming (right off your own terrace), snorkeling and diving.
Robert’s Caye is a favorite for more intensive anglers because the island is located in the heart of the areas amazing permit fishery. While staying on the mainland, anglers must typically run an additional thirty minutes out to the flats. On Robert’s Caye, you have a convenient head start getting your fishing day started.

Robert’s Grove is open all year. Quality fishing for all species can be found year round. Northern Belize are seldom the recipient of cold fronts or northerly breezes during the winter time that can have a negative effect on fishing conditions, however this type of event usually does not last long. The summer months can be a bit warmer than the peak season of January – April, however know that all Robert’s Grove accommodations are air-conditioned. We caution clients to avoid the peak of hurricane season between August – early October, however the weather can be ideal in the early fall.
In addition to the fishing, central Belize is a huge draw for outdoors lovers and eco-tourists. Unguided activities include access to a huge fleet of ocean kayaks and sailboats (hobie-cats), biking, use of the resort’s tennis courts, and of course multiple swimming pools and Jacuzzis.
Guided adventures in the area include amazing Scuba diving and snorkeling on the barrier reef and a myriad of other world-class dive sites. One of the most favorite non-angling activities is an organized excursion to the Lubaantun Mayan Ruins and a hike into nearby Blue Creek for some cave swimming or tubing. Other activities include guided tours by boat up the Monkey River (a jungle and bird lovers favorite), a tour of the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, horseback riding, manatee watching, or simply beach combing.
For guests looking to be pampered, Robert’s Grove operates their own “Sea-Spa” which offers every imaginable kind of massage, treatment, wrap, facial, manicures, pedicures, etc. Placencia Village is also located only a few minutes from the Inn at Robert’s Grove, and offers a number of local restaurants, a little shopping, and of course some nightlife.
