Kamalame Cay

96 Acre Private Island on North Andros Island

The Islands of The Bahamas are a 100,000-sq-mile archipelago of over 700 islands, mostly uninhabited, and home to some of the best saltwater flats fishing on the planet…all just a 20-40 minute flight from South Florida. If you are the type who likes visiting the tropics, getting a little sun, wearing flip flops to the pub, experiencing the most beautiful beaches on the planet, and icing down your shoulder muscles from pulling in wily and speedy creatures all day on a fly rod….join the club and c'mon, let's go to the Bahamas!

In 1492, Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the New World on the island of San Salvador in the eastern Bahamas. Columbus named the place "baja mar" (shallow sea in Spanish), because of the enormous and expansive ecosystem of shallow water flats that surround every island. Capitan Columbus was probably not looking for any ten-pound bonefish, but we are glad he found the place because we have picked up where he left off and spent a little time exploring the place ourselves!

Andros Island is considered by most anglers to be the premier bonefishing destination in the Bahamas. For those anglers who believe that experiencing Andros Island means sleeping in an under air-conditioned cinder-block hovel, Kamalame Cay’s comparative luxury is a welcome relief. Imagine a premiere bonefishing lodge with a tiki bar, a swimming pool, and tennis courts. Imagine a private oceanfront bungalow with bonefish flats only a hundred feet from the back door. Imagine gourmet Bahamian cuisine and ice cold Kalik served under the stars to the sounds of local musicians. Welcome to Kamalame Cay, located on a 96- acre private island on the northern part of Andros Island. Kamalame Cay is as much of a high-end resort / honeymooner destination as it is a fabulous bonefishing venue. We encourage clients looking to bring their spouse or significant other on their next saltwater adventure to strongly consider Kamalame Cay.

Experienced Bonefish anglers will tell you that Andros Island is better known as the "Land of the Giants". We could not agree more. Andros Island is also the largest and least populated of the Bahamian Islands. Much of the island is very swampy with the highest elevation being 12 feet above sea level. The island is divided into four sections, north middle, west and south. The northern part of the island is the most developed and agricultural part of the island. The middle part of the island is defined by a series of inlets, or "bights", which are composed of miles and miles of fishable flats and mangrove swamps. The southern end of Andros is well populated yet does boast of several good fishing areas. The western side of the island is very remote, sparsely populated, and has some of the most productive, pristine flats on Andros. The northern part of the island, where Kamalame Cay is located, is the most developed and safest part of the island. The majority of the eight thousand inhabitants on Andros reside on the eastern and southern portions of the island - thus the vast interior and west side of the island has remained relatively undeveloped.

The luxurious resort style nature of the Kamalame operation does not mean guests sacrifice quality fishing opportunities. The fishing program at Kamalame Cay is first class, and perfectly located for access to some of Andros’ most productive fisheries. “Abundant” is the word most used to describe the 2300 square miles of bonefishing flats on Andros Island. Bonefish average a solid 3-4 pounds and many in the 9-pound-plus class are encountered - even larger bones can be seen working the flats' edges. There have been some permit caught in the Joulter Cays north of Kamalame; however, just seeing these wary fish should be considered a bonus. You will find the flats of Northern Andros Island a very impressive fishery.

Each day, anglers will be taken by vehicle approximately forty minutes to a proven fishing location (Joulter Cays, North Bright, or the untouched northwest side of Andros) where they will meet a guide with boat. The majority of the fishing is often concentrated in the Joulters, a series of flats of the far north end of the island. The hard, sandy-bottomed nature of the majority of the flats in the Joulters makes for good wading opportunities. If you favor a more relaxed pace or if you plan a shortened fishing day, ask your guide to take you to the productive flats near Staniard Creek. If you just can't stop fishing at the end of the day, just a stone’s throw from your cottage you will find a series of productive flats where you can wade-fish until dark without a guide.

Reef and light-tackle offshore fishing is offered in one of the lodge’s two 24-foot Pathfinder center console V-hull boats powered by 200-horsepower Yamaha motors. Seasonally, anglers can expect to target dorado, wahoo, king mackerel, tuna, grouper and marlin within sight of the lodge. Captains at Kamalame are well versed in both fly and conventional tackle (additional cost associated with off-shore fishing).

There is no question that Kamalame Cay offers the finest accommodations in the Bahamas. Couples interested in a romantic getaway will not find a better place to indulge in five-star luxury, massages, fine dining, and unsurpassed service. Numerous clients actually book a trip to Kamalame with no intention of fishing. If you are an angler, you will not have to worry for a moment about your non-angling spouse or friend having an activity, or wonder if they are taken care of. They will be sipping rum drinks in the pool or on the beach, enjoying a SCUBA adventure, or relaxing in the exercise / spa facility.

Kamalame Cay offers a variety of uniquely exquisite accommodations including complete villa suites and intimate cottage suites built from native stone and appointed with Indonesian furniture. Rooms feature inviting verandas, 20-foot wood beam ceilings, large bathrooms that include brass fixtures and oversized soaking tubs or showers with ocean views, air conditioning, rows of French doors draped with muslin curtains all with the ocean at your doorstep. Every villa or cottage suite is private and secluded yet with miles of exclusive beach that beckons the beachcomber. All rooms include hairdryers, shampoo and amenities, plush bathrobes, insulated ice buckets, and a stereo CD system. Additionally, an in-room complimentary food and beverage bar with a selection of cheese, crackers, fruit, coffee, tea, fresh milk, sodas, beer, juice and bottled water is provided.

Four Marina rooms are also available, offering simpler accommodations without any sacrifice in renowned Kamalame quality. The Marina rooms are great for guests interested in saving a little money and concentrating on the fishing. We recommend the Cottage Suites and the Beachfront Villas for couples or those who would like larger accommodations.

The "Great House" on the Cay serves as a perfect gathering place for meals, cocktails and fish tales. It is decorated with art and antiques from the owner’s collection, filled with comfortable oversized furniture, and wrapped with an inviting verandah that offers a tranquilizing panoramic view of the sea. Outstanding dinners featuring delicious soups, fresh fruits and vegetables, succulent lobster, and other delightful main dishes are accompanied by fine wines and topped off with amazing desserts. These magnificent meals are elegantly presented by Kamalame's top-notch chef and his attentive staff. Wonderful breakfasts are served buffet-style with fresh orange juice and made-to-order omelets. Generous boat lunches of roasted chicken and beef tenderloin help complete a perfect day on the water. Kamalame Cay offers the angler and non-angler alike peaceful solitude with all the amenities.
Kamalame also has a small fly shop with a modest amount of equipment to supplement whatever you forget including sunglasses and film. The shop has selection of tackle and supplies, but we do advise anglers to arrive with a good selection of flies, terminal tackle and items recommended on the equipment list provided in the pre-trip packages received upon booking.

Daily commercial flights are available to Andros Island from Nassau with Western Air. There is also a charter flight option available from Ft. Lauderdale directly to the Fresh Creek / Kamalame Cay Airport; only five minutes drive from the lodge. See below for information about charter flights. Kamalame Cay handles all transfers to and from Fresh Creek Airport.

Day 1
Travel to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Upon arrival at Ft. Lauderdale, you will take a charter flight directly to the Fresh Creek Airport on Northern Andros Island. (Commercial Flights are available from Nassau, however for convenience we recommend the charter flight option for larger groups) From Fresh Creek you are picked up and transferred to Kamalame. Upon arrival at Kamalame you will meet the lodge manager, get situated in your room, and prepare yourself for cocktails, dinner, and the next few days of fishing.

Day 2-?
Fishing Days. Guests typically awake around 6:00AM for breakfast, which is served in the main restaurant, otherwise known as the Great House. After breakfast guests gather their gear and meet at the ferry dock. Anglers fishing near the lodge meet their guides, board skiffs and head to the flats near the lodge and Staniard Creek. Anglers who have arranged to fish the Joulters take a short (5 minute) ferry ride to meet waiting air-conditioned vehicles for the 40-minute drive to Morgan’s Bluff where they meet their guide and boat, and start the fishing day. Anglers fish out of Maverick skiffs or wade the expansive flats of the Joulters. Lunch is taken in the field. The fishing day is complete around 5:00PM and guests are transferred back to Kamalame for cocktails and dinner. If you favor a more relaxed pace or just can't stop fishing at the end of the day, wander out your back door into miles of productive flats where you can fish 'til your heart's content without a guide.

Departure Day
Guests are transported back to Fresh Creek and escorted through the check in procedure at the airstrip for your charter flight back to Ft. Lauderdale. Upon arrival back in Ft. Lauderdale, take a cab back to the commercial terminal for your flight home.

One thing people often neglect when considering a trip to the Bahamas is the weather. The Bahamas are actually in the Atlantic Ocean, not the Caribbean Sea. As a result the islands are more susceptible to northerly cold fronts that its Caribbean neighbors to the south. There are a few loose weather guidelines you must consider.

December – March:
Depending upon which island you are on, cool weather and windier conditions can be a factor. The fish are of course always there, but you run the risk of getting cooler weather from the States. However, it is equally as possible to have 85-degree days and little wind.

April - June 15:
The prime Spring months to fish the Bahamas. Consistently warm (not too hot) weather dominates the forecast. There is typically less wind as well. If I could choose one month to fish anywhere in the Bahamas it would be April or May.

June 15- August 1:
The fish are there, however hotter conditions and little breeze often exist. If you don’t mind the heat, the fishing can be excellent and is a good time for beginners to learn because of the lack of wind.

August 1 - October 15:
Hurricane Season! Most lodges are closed and you run the risk of lousy weather. However we have had wonderful trips during this time frame.

October 15 – November:
The best time to fish in the fall. Conditions are very similar to April - June type conditions.

As you know nobody can predict the weather. The above calendar dictates trends in the weather that we have observed through the years. It is very possible for any type of weather to occur on your trip regardless of the time of year.

The diversity of the fishery allows for flexibility when choosing fishing areas as they relate to tidal fluctuations. However, some anglers like to take into consideration the lunar calendar, and thus the tide chart for the prospective itinerary. Predicting Mother Nature is not our business, and the fact is numerous variables dictate tidal fluctuations. In addition, some flats fish better on an incoming, outgoing, neap, or spring tide. I always like to say that an eight-knot breeze and plenty of sun is more important than the tide. However, if you would like to get specific about the lunar calendar as it relates to your trip feel free to give us a call.

The third longest barrier reef in the world is just a mile from Kamalame’s beautiful beach, offering divers and snorkelers the perfect opportunity to savor exceptional experiences without the hassle of long boat rides or crowded dive sites.

This lush, living reef harbors many wonders from gently swaying sea anemones tucked in brilliant coral to tiny seahorses that gracefully ride the current. Watch rainbow-colored parrotfish snack on the coral as animated clownfish parade in front of you. Explore the bustling shallows, follow huge grouper through coral caverns, keep watch for majestic manta rays gliding over the deep blue, or just quietly drift along the edge of the dramatic wall that plunges 6000 feet to the bottom of the "Tongue of the Ocean."

Kamalame’s on-site dive center and PADI certified instructors provide top-notch equipment and service on this remote island. If you have not tried diving, this is a great opportunity to take the Discover Scuba Diving course or get your full diving certification. Experienced divers will revel in the 100-foot visibility and amazingly diverse marine life.
Additional activities at Kamalame include beachcombing, windsurfing, tennis (two tennis courts), swimming in the freshwater pool and nature walks with a staff naturalist. You may want to consider paddling one of the Cay’s sea-kayaks through the gentle inland creeks that meet the sea at Kamalame’s doorstep. Guided sea-kayak trips that include lunch are easily arranged.

Kamalame offers romantic dinners for two on the beach with your own personal chef as well as private picnics or candlelit dinners on deserted cays. Experience a couple’s massage on the beach, or let the staff at Kamalame plan an excursion to a remote location via boat or sea-plane.

CHARTER FLIGHT OPTION SPECIFICS
The charter flight option is a direct one-hour flight to the island from Ft. Lauderdale International. Using the charter flight is an economical and practical option for larger group sizes.

The alternative for smaller groups is to fly commercially with local carrier, Western Air, which dictates taking an additional connection through Nassau. In accordance with international flight schedules from the U.S., many Kamalame Cay guests often elect to overnight in Nassau the night before pushing on to the lodge the following morning.
The cost of the Round-trip charter flight from Ft. Lauderdale to Andros is based upon the number of people in your party and the amount of aggregate baggage and passenger weight in your party. Our charter service, Air Flight Charters, operates comfortable, eight passenger Cessna 402B and 402C aircraft. To determine the cost of the round-trip airfare to/from Ft. Lauderdale and the Kamalame Cay / Fresh Creek Airport per person, please contact us for a quote as these rates are always fluctuating due to the price of fuel. Generally speaking, a 1-10 person Cessna 402 aircraft is approximately $2400 roundtrip depending upon the equipment required in accordance with weight limits.
