Season Opener – Week 1 Report! – Batting 1000 so far.

Kaye arrived Cancun on October 30th and hurriedly began the process of getting the building polished and functional for our first guests of the season. While Dick is still in Alaska on the job site this was her first go alone at a season opener – and she has done a heck of a job.  The lodge and staff were ready for our first guests of the season arriving November 9th…  Claude Hamel and Pierre Monseau of Quebec, Canada accompanied by Ben Crompton of Bend, Oregon and Dean Dilday or Puerto Vallarta (originally from Bend).

Pierre and Claude have had multiple trips to Cuba over the years with mixed results and were on an R&D mission to consider switching venues for their annual salty trip.  Dean and Ben were down to celebrate Dean’s 40th birthday.

The weather was a big marginal at times, but the boys had no issues making the most of it.  Kaye’s daily reports were very favorable with zillions of bones, a 20-jump (10 landed) tarpon day by Dean and Ben, a few jacks and cudas – and a very jovial group with a high cerveza consumption rate and more than one significant hangover.

On the permit front it was another special week.  The boys were consistently in nice schools of fish all week and everyone had multiple hookups.  Claude kicked off the season with his first ever permit on day #2 – and our first of the season (a respectable 12 pounder).  Ben followed up with one of his own mid week, but the real magical day was Thursday.  Dean, guided by Charley and Nino found a laid up monster that ate on the first cast and following a 45 minute rodeo involving drag issues and a lot of drama, landed a 20+ pounder.  This was Dean’s first ever permit – and one he will have a hard time duplicating.  Pierre too, following 6 perm-less trips to Cuba in search of permit, landed a legit 12 pounder as well with Korreano and Tony.  At the end of the week we had 4 anglers and 4 permit landed.  1000% batting average so far.

After digesting the daily email reports from Kaye for the week there is no doubt this was our best season opener ever.  Aside from the obvious successes on the flats, Kaye also illustrated to me yet another familial, laid back, and FUN experience had by all guests.  Dean called the week “a dream” and Pierre / Claude are planning a quick turnaround return trip in January.  As the sales and marketing guy for the Palometa Club – this is what makes the place so consistently special and unique from the competition.  Thanks guys!  Below are a few nice images from the week and stay tuned for more.
