Private Lessons

Tailwaters Fly Fishing Co.

New to fly fishing?

Here at Tailwaters, we are crazy about fly fishing. It's a hobby, turned passion, which commonly results into a healthy obsession. You might be curious, what’s the fuss about?  Let us show you with a private casting lesson.  We will walk you through the shop, introduce you to the basics, and get a fly rod in your hand.  Fly fishing can be intimidating for beginners - we aim to make it easier.  Here’s what you can expect:

  • Schedule: Give us a call at the shop to get your lesson on the schedule.  Once we get a little background, we will set you up with an instructor best suited for your needs.
  • Arrival: We recommend arriving at the shop a few minutes before your scheduled lesson.  We’d love the chance to properly introduce our team and walk you around the store.
  • Lesson: We all felt awkward holding a fly rod for the first time.  But every cast or drill gets you more comfortable.  We will show you how to hold the rod, how the rod and line work together, and casting techniques tailored to the fish you want to target.
  • Wrap-Up: The journey doesn’t end with your lesson.  We will leave you with casting drills and individualized lesson notes to practice on your own, or prepare you for your next private lesson.  Your instructor can also recommend a fly fishing rod and reel outfit, or other tools and accessories, if you’re ready to own your own gear.  And to properly welcome you to the Tailwaters family, each student receives a special gift at the conclusion of their first lesson.

We love sharing our passion and can’t wait to walk alongside you on your fly fishing journey.  From education, to equipment, to exploration, we offer a 360 degree program to service anglers of all ages and levels.  Let’s go!

Intermediate and Advanced Casting Instruction

Casting lessons are not just for beginners.  Let us help you take your game from freshwater to saltwater, get more distance out of your double haul, or dial in your technical skills for species-specific fishing.  Regardless of the scenario, we’re here to help set you up for a productive day on the water.

The structure of our intermediate and advanced casting lessons run similar to our beginner courses, but our lesson focus is your focus.  When you call the shop to schedule your lesson, let us know your goals and we will set you up with an instructor equipped to meet them.
