What Gravel guard means
Most stockingfoot waders have a gravel guard built into each leg. It’s a tapered cuff—usually neoprene or heavy stretch fabric—that pulls down over the boot and closes with a hook-and-loop tab or a small zipper.
The guard typically has a lace hook at the front. That hook clips to the boot laces so the cuff stays down while wading and walking. Some boots have a dedicated loop or D-ring for the hook, but standard laces work fine.
Why it matters on the water
Sand and pea gravel inside a boot turns into hot spots fast, and it can grind on neoprene booties over time. A properly seated gravel guard reduces both problems, especially on shallow, rocky rivers and on long walk-ins.
It also keeps the wader leg from riding up and catching current. That makes footing feel more stable, and it keeps the boot-and-wader connection from feeling sloppy as the day goes on.
