Why anglers choose fly rods from Tailwaters

We’ve spent enough time on the water to know a fly rod can either elevate your day—or make you wish you’d packed a different one. That’s why we’re picky about what makes it into our rod lineup. Every rod we carry has been tested, trusted, and fished hard by our staff, and customers.

Whether you’re picking up your first 5-weight or dialing in a rod for a demanding saltwater destination, our selection includes only the rods we’d fish ourselves. Swing by the shop in Dallas or chat with us online, we’re happy to talk through what’ll work best for where you’re headed.

    1. What fly rod weight should I start with?

Most anglers start with a 9-foot 5-weight—it’s versatile enough for trout, panfish, and bass in most freshwater situations. If you’re unsure, reach out and we’ll help you dial it in.

    2. What's the difference between freshwater and saltwater fly rods?

Saltwater rods are built stiffer (faster), stronger, and with corrosion-resistant components. They’re made to cast larger flies in wind and handle tough, fast fish. We carry both.

    3. Do I need an expensive rod to get started?

Not at all. There are great rods at every price point, and we carry several models that deliver excellent performance without breaking the bank.

    4. Can I try out a rod before buying?

If you're local to Dallas, swing by the shop—we can walk you through rod options, let you handle them in person, and help you match it with a reel and line. Otherwise, call or email us and we’ll get you taken care of!

    5. What brands of fly rods do you carry?

We stock trusted brands like Sage, Scott, G. Loomis, Hardy, and Thomas & Thomas, among others. Each one earns its place on the wall.
