Why Anglers Trust Our Fly Fishing Luggage Collection
Not all fishing travel bags are created equal—and we’ve seen more than our share fall apart in baggage claim or fail in the field. The majority of our Tailwaters team has extensive worldwide travel experience and we put luggage to the ultimate test. Simply put, if bags fail, we don’t stock them.
Here’s why anglers choose from our collection:
Staff-Tested, Guide-Approved
Duffels, boat bags, rod cases and carry-ons… we’ve used them all and have dragged them through the jungle, saltwater flats and rivers in Alaska.
Top Brands, No Fluff
We stock proven options from Fishpond, Simms, Patagonia, and others—brands that know what anglers need when traveling with valuable gear.
FAQ
1. What’s the best type of bag for a fly fishing trip?
It depends on where you’re going and how much gear you're hauling. For short domestic trips, a carry-on duffel with rod tube compatibility is ideal. For remote destinations, we recommend a waterproof, high-capacity duffel with separate wet/dry compartments.
2. Can I carry fly rods on a plane?
Yes, and no — most 4-piece rods under 9 feet pack down into tubes that fit within airline carry-on limits. Many of our bags are designed to accommodate rod tubes internally or alongside your main gear. But, it boils down to where you are traveling as certain countries can be stingy about fly fishing gear. We recommend that you contact our travel department about what gear you can carry on for your specific trip.
3. Are these bags waterproof?
Some are fully waterproof (like roll-top dry duffels), while others are water-resistant. Check product specs—many feature welded seams, TPU coatings, or waterproof zippers for enhanced protection.
4. Do I need a special bag for waders and boots?
While not required, dedicated wet/dry compartments make it much easier to keep muddy gear separated from clean clothes. We carry several bags with vented wader compartments for this exact purpose.
5. What’s the difference between a gear bag and a fishing pack?
Fishing packs are worn on the body while fishing—gear bags and luggage are built for travel and transport. Many anglers use both: one for the trip, one for the water.
