Destination Description

The only game in town in the Berry Islands, Soul Fly Lodge has quickly become recognized as the most exciting new fly fishing lodge in the Bahamas.  The lodge is located on the east side of Great Harbour Cay. Soul Fly Lodge came roaring out of the gate a few years ago to become a must-visit Bahamian destination for all anglers. Soul Fly Lodge sits 22 feet above sea level, overlooking the churning Atlantic Ocean on the east side of Great Harbour Cay. They are less than five minutes from the newly rebuilt airport and only a few minutes from the marina.

Soul Fly completed renovated a stunning property complete with six guest rooms for a maximum of only eight guests per week.  The lodge boasts of a 20 x 50 foot swimming pool, an incredible trained chef, recently remodeled rooms, and a beautiful setting on one of the prettiest beaches in the Atlantic.  Their guide staff has some of the most fabled names in the Bahamian guiding community, targeting a super-diversified fishery relative to other exclusively bonefish-focused operations. With that accolade comes an unpressured fishing experience over white sand flats, lush turtle grass, and a backcountry system that all offer legitimate opportunities for large bonefish and a surprisingly legit permit fishery. The lodge offers year round chances to target bonefish, permit, triggerfish, barracuda, mutton snapper, tarpon, and other flats species from the bow of the skiff.  The Berrys are also a very appealing destination for active non-angling companions with a handful of organized and DIY activities when availability allows.

FISHING

The Berry Islands fishery offers the height of species and style of fishing diversity we have seen in the Bahamas. From expanses of tailing bonefish on firm, wadable white sand flats, to lush turtle grass, ocean edges, thick mangroves, and backcountry creeks, the fishing around Great Harbour Cay is dynamic. Groups of bonefish are more common than singles and doubles, and the fish here range from 2 to 10+ pounds with average fish around 3 to 4 pounds. Short runs to nearby flats will have you fishing within 15 minutes. All the guides run 2021 Lodge Edition, Maverick 17-foot HPX-V & S boats with 70 HP Yamaha engines.

The combination of shallow, wade-friendly, hard white sand flats and deeper water surrounding them sets up beautifully for larger bonefish as well as one of the Bahamas’ best permit fisheries. The permit fishing in the Berry Islands is a special, long kept secret. Their guide team has been chasing devils for many years and are well-prepared to put you in the best position to intersect with arguably the toughest fish to fool with a fly. In the warmer months, and even sometimes in the dead of winter, Mutton Snapper can be found patrolling the flats. Muttons are tough, dive for coral, and fight like a bulldog. You won’t regret connecting with this beautiful flats target as they are arguably just as discerning as the permit. Catch the right mutton and the chef will throw it on the grill back at the lodge. Soul Fly is also lucky to have triggerfish right in their backyard.

WHEN TO GO / SEASONALITY

DECEMBER – FEBRUARY Cool weather and windier conditions can be a factor. The fish are of course always there, but you run the risk of getting cooler weather from the States. However, you are more likely to enjoy 80-degree days and little wind. Some of the best bonefish fishing occurs following the passing of a cold front when water on the flats warm, inviting rested bones back on to feed. This is a great time for trophy bonefish.

MARCH – JUNE The prime spring months to fish the Bahamas. Consistently warm (not too hot) weather dominates the forecast. There is typically less wind as well.

JULY – SEPTEMBER Late summer months can be hotter in the Bahamas of course, but the fishing can be incredible. You start to worry a bit more about storm season this time of year, but when a tropical storm is not headed your way, anglers generally enjoy consistently good weather conditions.

OCTOBER – NOVEMBER The best time to fish in the fall. Conditions are very similar to March – April type conditions.

NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES

Great Harbour Cay (GHC) is home to beautiful beaches, golf, diving, snorkeling, offshore fishing, lunch at Flo’s, exploring the caves, and plunging into a blue hole. Note that while there are many interesting non-angling adventures to be had here, the lodge generally does not accommodate non-angling rates during peak season. See our brochure for more information about the non-fishing opportunities on Great Harbour Cay.
