What it is
Hareline Ostrich Marabou is a fly-tying feather made from ostrich plumes. The fibers are soft and the stems are pliable, so it wraps cleanly and breathes in the water with a pulsing, mobile action. It’s also durable for a marabou-style material, especially when you’re wrapping or palmering it.
What to tie with it
Use it for tails, collars, wings, and hackles, either tied in as a clump or wrapped like a hackle. It’s a natural fit for wrapping and palmering to build a moving body or to create a full collar that pushes water. The fibers closer to the butt of the quill can be used when you want a larger profile.
Flies and the fish they're for
Ostrich herl shows up in Intruder-style flies, where that sweeping movement is there to trigger anadromous fish like steelhead and salmon in rivers. “Balanced” ostrich patterns are commonly fished under an indicator for trout in stillwaters and lakes, where a pulsing collar or body can suggest leeches or other swimming food. In saltwater, ostrich herl is regularly tied into flies for species like bonefish, permit, tarpon, striped bass, and redfish, where that soft, lifelike motion helps in both flats and inshore water.

Compared to stiffer or more synthetic alternatives, ostrich marabou has more lifelike movement in the water, especially when you build collars or palmered bodies.
