What it is

Dr. Slick’s Hair Stacker is a precision-machined aluminum tool for lining up the tips of cut hair or fur before you tie it in. The smooth interior lets the bundle slide and settle cleanly, and the durable construction resists warping when it gets knocked around on the bench. Its ergonomic shape makes it comfortable to handle when you’re stacking lots of small clumps.

What to tie with it

Use it any time you need even tips for hair wings or hair tails: cut a clump, drop it in, tap the stacker on a hard surface, then grab the aligned tips and measure to the hook. It’s especially handy when you’re stacking smaller bundles for dry flies in the 16–20 range, where uneven tips show up fast. It also helps when you’re building consistent, repeatable wings across a dozen flies.

Flies and the fish they're for

A hair stacker shows up in real day-to-day dry-fly tying, like Sparkle Duns and X-Caddis, where aligned deer or elk hair wings help the fly float and sit correctly for trout on rivers and spring creeks. It also fits techniques used on mayfly dries like Blue Winged Olive patterns, which are a staple for trout during BWO hatches on tailwaters and freestones. Any time you’re tying hair-wing dries for picky fish, getting those tips even is part of making the fly fish the way it’s supposed to.
