What it is

The Dr Slick Jumbo Bodkin is a fly-tying bodkin with a sharp point and a carbon fiber handle. It’s lightweight but rigid and strong, with a larger ergonomic grip and good balance in the hand.

What to tie with it

Use it to apply head cement, UV resin, or superglue right where you want it without flooding a head or clogging materials. It’s also a go-to for picking out trapped fibers, teasing dubbing, manipulating small parts on the hook, and clearing obstructions from the hook eye before you whip finish.

Flies and the fish they're for

On a Woolly Bugger, the bodkin helps you pick out the body and add cement to lock down the head; that fly is a workhorse for trout in rivers and stillwaters, and also for bass and panfish. For a Parachute Adams and Elk Hair Caddis, it’s handy for clearing the hook eye and placing tiny dabs of cement, and those are classic dry flies for trout on freestones and spring creeks. On a Zebra Midge, it helps keep the hook eye clean and lets you touch a tiny drop of resin or cement to the thread for durability; midges are staple trout flies on tailwaters. For a Copper John, it’s useful for controlling glue/resin and for cleanup around the head, and that pattern is commonly fished for trout and also for smallmouth in rivers.

How it compares

Compared to a standard bodkin, the jumbo handle gives you a larger, more ergonomic grip, which can feel steadier when you’re doing precise glue work or working small flies. The tool still behaves like a bodkin at the point; the difference is mostly in how it sits in your hand.
