What it is
The Dr Slick Jumbo Dubbing Hook is a fly-tying dubbing hook with a carbon fiber handle and a steel hook. The handle is light in the hand but built to take daily bench use, and the larger diameter gives you a comfortable grip. Up front it has a fine, sharp, angled tip that gets into dubbed material without tearing the thread.
What to tie with it
Use it after you’ve dubbed a body or thorax to pick out trapped fibers and rough things up into a buggy silhouette. It’s also handy for reaching under thread wraps to pull fibers into place and to form those leggy lateral bits that make nymphs and emergers look alive. It’s equally useful on a Peeking Caddis to pull dubbing out around the collar for a more lifelike caddis pupa look for trout, and on a Kaufmann’s Stonefly Nymph to rough the thorax and make the nymph read bigger for trout and other river fish that eat stoneflies.
