What it is
The Hareline Ahrex SA280 Saltwater Minnow is a short-shank, wide-gap minnow-style hook built for saltwater use. It has an A-Steel finish and a strong wire build, and the shape tracks straight with excellent keeling when you hang a bigger profile off the front half of the shank. That wide gap is there to keep hooking room even when the fly gets bulky.
What to tie with it
This is a go-to platform for predator flies in both salt and fresh, especially baitfish patterns and big streamers that would choke out a normal gap. How it compares
Compared to Gamakatsu SC15 Wide Gap Hooks, the SA280’s A-Steel finish is less bright in the water than a tin finish. If you prefer a brighter-looking finish, that’s a real difference between the two.
