What it is
The Hareline Ahrex TP650 is a 26-degree bent streamer hook with a long shank and a black nickel finish. It has a chemically sharpened point, and that forward bend sets the hook up to ride point-up (inverted) once you build the fly around it. Physically, that angle gives you a natural “keel” for heads and full-bodied patterns that need a tipped-down front end.
What to tie with it
Use it when you’re building angled streamer heads, especially wedge head deer-hair styles, because the 26-degree bend helps you stack and shape material without fighting the hook geometry. It’s also a go-to for hook point up streamers and inverted crayfish patterns where you want the fly to track right and stay off the bottom a bit. It shows up a lot in articulated streamer builds where you need the front hook to carry a big profile.
Flies and the fish they're for
This hook is designed around articulated streamer patterns like the Drunk and Disorderly, where that angled wedge head is part of the whole swim and profile. Fished on a sink tip or full sink, that style of fly is a staple for big trout in rivers and stillwaters, and it crosses over cleanly to bass fishing in lakes and rivers when you want a bulky baitfish look. The same point-up, full-bodied setup also fits the way a lot of predator streamers are fished around structure and along the bottom.
How it compares
Compared to bent hooks meant for nymphs, the TP650 is positioned for large streamer patterns and bigger, shaped heads. Versus a 60-degree bent option like the Ahrex PR370, the TP650’s 26-degree bend is the better fit for angled heads, since a 60-degree eye bend doesn’t play as well with that wedge-head geometry.
