What it is
Hareline Big Pack Mallard Flank is a selection of mallard flank feathers in a larger pack, with a mix of feather sizes. The feathers have a soft hand and that natural barred pattern that shows up well on the hook. In the water they move easily, so you get a little pulse and collapse instead of a stiff, spiky profile.
What to tie with it
This is a go-to feather for nymph tails and nymph legs, and it’s equally at home as wings on dries and wets when you want a mottled, buggy look. You can use it for streamer wings and also for crustacean details like crayfish claws and shellbacks, plus crab and shrimp claws. It’s also a handy material for looped-wing emergers, large soft hackles, cut wingpads, and traditional Spey and salmon flies.
Flies and the fish they're for
Light Cahill and Dark Cahill Dry Flies commonly use flank for the wing, and they’re classic trout dries for mayfly hatches on rivers and spring creeks. Light Cahill and Dark Cahill Wet Flies lean on that soft, barred feather for winging in a down-and-across swing for trout in freestones and tailwaters. How it compares
Mallard flank is a common substitute for wood duck flank because you can get a similar barred pattern and softness. Wood duck is often picked when you want more visual appeal, but the choice usually comes down to budget and personal preference at the bench.
