What it is
Hareline Bleached Elk is a patch of natural elk hair that’s been bleached to a light, high-visibility shade. Elk hair is hollow, buoyant, and stiff, with long fibers that flare easily when you cinch it down. On the hook it wants to stand up and splay, which is exactly why it makes such solid floating silhouettes.
What to tie with it
Use it for dry-fly wings and tails, especially upright, flared wings where you want the hair to lock in place and help the fly ride high. It’s also a go-to for spun-hair bodies when you want a buoyant, buggy profile. At the vise you’ll mostly be stacking and winging it for caddis-style wings, or packing and trimming it when you spin it.
Flies and the fish they're for
This is classic Elk Hair Caddis material, including CDC & Elk-style variants, which are staple dries for trout on rivers and also get fished on lakes when caddis are around. It’s also right at home on a Stimulator, a big buoyant searching dry for trout that doubles as a great dry-dropper indicator in riffles and pocket water. For chunky, high-floating caddis profiles like the Goddard Caddis, the hollow flaring hair helps build that dense body that trout key on during caddis activity. Dave’s Hopper is another match, where the stiff, buoyant hair supports a big terrestrial that trout eat along banks, cutgrass edges, and meadow streams.
How it compares
Compared to deer body hair, elk hair is stiffer, longer, and more hollow, so it flares more easily and builds buoyancy faster. Deer body hair tends to be shorter, finer, and softer with less flare, and elk can also substitute for deer hair or mule deer hair when you want a similar spun or winged effect.
