Hareline Cactus Chenille

What it is

Hareline Cactus Chenille is a spiky, shiny chenille with short fibers that stand off the core and give you a bristly silhouette. Those shorter fibers mean it doesn’t breathe and undulate as much as longer-pile options underwater, but it holds up well and takes abuse.

What to tie with it

Wrap it as a body material when you want quick bulk and a defined shape without a lot of extra steps. It also works well wrapped as a head on streamers and jig flies to build a durable, textured profile and a little flash right at the front.

Flies and the fish they're for

On a Woolly Bugger, cactus chenille gives you a fast, durable body for trout in rivers and stillwaters, and it also crosses over to warmwater fish like bass. Tied as a Euro Jig streamer, it’s a handy way to build a compact, spiky body on a jig hook for trout in tight current where you want the fly to hold its shape. For a Cinder Worm, the texture helps the body show up and stay tough for trout in tailwaters and spring creeks where worm patterns get fished hard.

How it compares

Compared with polar chenille, cactus chenille runs shorter in the fiber and has less underwater undulation, but it’s more durable.
