Hareline Calf Body Hair

What it is

Hareline Calf Body Hair is natural calf hair packaged for fly tying. The fibers are generally straight, handle easily on the hook, and have excellent buoyancy, which helps keep dry-fly parts riding high and visible.

What to tie with it

Use it for dry fly wings, especially Wulff-style split wings, and for parachute posts where you want a clean, upright marker. It also works for dry-fly tails and for down wings on terrestrials and big dries like grasshoppers, stoneflies, caddis, and emergers.

Flies and the fish they're for

Royal Wulff is a classic use: the calf body hair makes the split wing that rides high and stays easy to track, and it’s fished as a general attractor dry for trout in freestone rivers and riffly water. Trude-style flies also use calf body hair for the wing and are fished as buoyant attractor dries for trout on streams and rivers, especially when you need a visible dry that holds up in broken water.

How it compares

Compared to Calf Tail, calf body hair is straighter and tends to build a slimmer wing profile. Calf tail runs longer and crinklier, which can make fuller wings and suit larger flies.
