What it is
Hareline Calf Tail is natural calf tail hair that’s been UV-treated. The fibers are soft and supple but still strong and durable, and the UV fluorescent and UV reflective treatment adds visibility. In the water it keeps a clean, fishy silhouette and moves with a lifelike pulse.
What to tie with it
Use it for upright dry-fly wings, parachute posts, and other wing styles where you want a durable, easy-to-see target. It also works for tails and small streamer or wet-fly winging where you want hair that holds up and still has motion. Calf tail is a common pick when you’re learning winging technique because it’s forgiving and builds a fishable profile.
Flies and the fish they're for
Calf tail is a classic wing material on Wulff-style dries like the Royal Wulff, which is fished for trout on rivers and freestones when you need a buoyant, highly visible searching dry. It’s also used on the Rio Grande Trude, another trout dry that covers water well and doubles as an attractor/low-profile imitation depending on how you fish it. Patterns like the Thunderhead Dry Fly use calf tail in the wing package too, and they’re typically fished for trout as general-purpose dries on moving water.
