What it is

Chicone’s Fettuccine Foam is a pre-cut foam strip designed for fly tying. It’s buoyant and stackable, so you can layer pieces to build thicker profiles or add flotation exactly where you want it. The fettuccine shape gives you consistent strips without having to cut them down from a larger sheet.

What to tie with it

Use it anywhere you want a flotation element: stacked segments on bodies, a buoyant back on top of a pattern, or layered pieces to shape bugs and baitfish-style profiles. At the vise it’s a simple cut-and-tie material, and the stackable strips also lend themselves to building and shaping spun or stacked heads.

Flies and the fish they're for

Drew Chicone’s Midnight Special uses this foam to add buoyancy for fishing around cover, making it a strong fit for shallow-water predators like snook and baby tarpon in mangroves and backwaters. The Pinecone Cicada uses foam for a floating, high-riding cicada profile that’s typically fished to freshwater surface feeders like trout and bass on rivers and ponds during summer bug activity. In both fresh and salt, this foam’s main job in the pattern is keeping the fly up and fishable around structure and debris.

How it compares

Compared to other fly tying foams sold in larger sheets, the difference here is the pre-cut fettuccine strip format, which saves the step of slicing uniform strips yourself. If you like stacking foam for repeatable bodies and flotation, the strip shape is the point.
