What it is

Hareline Chocklett’s Loco Foam is a flat, closed-cell foam sheet for tying flies that need float, shape, and toughness. It has a flat profile that cuts cleanly into strips or shapes, and the closed-cell structure keeps it buoyant and durable. The surface carries a metallic or pearlescent sheen that shows up on the finished fly.

What to tie with it

Use it for foam dry fly bodies, including palmered bodies where you wrap or spiral materials over a foam underbody. It’s a natural fit for terrestrial bodies and extended bodies for dragonflies and damselflies, where you want a long, stable silhouette without waterlogging. It also works for bass bug bodies and for streamer heads and bodies, including neutrally buoyant and diving-action streamers where foam helps control attitude in the water.

Flies and the fish they're for

Crease Flies and Gurglers are classic places to use this kind of foam body, and both are commonly fished for redfish and speckled trout on the flats and in the marsh, as well as striped bass around rips and structure. The Disco Beetle is a foam terrestrial that gets eaten by trout on rivers and creeks when beetles are getting knocked into the water. A Chartreuse Slider-style foam bug is a warmwater topwater play, typically aimed at largemouth bass in ponds, lakes, and backwaters.

How it compares

Compared to generic fly-tying foam sheets, Loco Foam is noted for having a bolder metallic and pearlescent sheen. Compared to Hareline Fly Foam, the texture is similar but Fly Foam is more about solid, less-shiny finishes and comes in fewer options.
