What it is

Hareline Coastal Deer Hair is UV-treated coastal deer hair with a UV2 double-dye treatment built in. The fibers run short and dense with sharp-tapered tips, and the slightly hollow structure gives you buoyancy on the water. It also throws UV fluorescence and UV reflectance, which can add a subtle signal without changing the basic hairwing look.

What to tie with it

Use it for hairwings on small dry flies, especially when you need the hair to stack cleanly and hold its shape. It’s a natural fit for comparadun and Sparkle Dun wings, and it works well for caddis patterns where you’re setting a tight, durable hairwing. Because the hair is dense with some hollow flare, you can control how much it splays by thread tension and hair volume.

Flies and the fish they're for

Comparaduns tied with this hair are a go-to mayfly dry for picky trout on rivers and spring creeks when fish are eating duns in the film. Sparkle Duns use it the same way, giving trout a low-riding mayfly profile that’s effective on tailwaters and freestones during mayfly hatches. It also fits right into classic caddis dry-fly work, where trout are feeding on adult caddis skittering or sitting on the surface.

How it compares

It’s shorter and denser than other deer hair, which helps on smaller patterns where long, wispy hair can get in the way or refuse to stack and flare the way you want.
