What it is

Hareline Comparadun Hair is fine-textured deer hair picked and prepped specifically for comparadun-style dry-fly wings. It traps less air than typical deer hair so it doesn’t act like a big corky hairwing, but it still sits naturally on the surface and supports an upright wing. On the hook it stacks clean and flares in a controlled way when you cinch it down.

What to tie with it

Use it for comparadun wings, upright dry-fly wings, and Sparkle Dun wings, especially on small to medium downwing mayfly profiles. A thread base helps you control the flare and keep the wing tight; many tyers add a light dubbing base under the tie-in point to help the hair stand up. It also fits caddis, hopper, and stonefly dry patterns where you want an upright hairwing without a lot of buoyant bulk.

Flies and the fish they're for

Comparaduns and Sparkle Duns are staple adult mayfly dry flies for trout on rivers and spring creeks during mayfly hatches, when fish are feeding in the film or right on top. Because these patterns are hackleless and rely on that stacked deer-hair wing for profile and float, this hair is doing the main job of holding the fly in the surface while still looking slim. They’re also common “match the hatch” choices for picky wild trout in clear water when you need a clean silhouette rather than a bushy hackle footprint.

How it compares

Coastal Blacktail Deer Body Hair can be a decent substitute, and it’s more versatile across a broader range of hairwing needs. Comparadun Hair is the better pick when you’re tying strictly comparaduns and want that fine, controlled wing without extra buoyant bulk.
