What it is
The Hareline Core C1180 Dry and Light Nymph is a lightweight fly tying hook with a bronze finish, a small barb, and a wide gap. It’s built to help a fly ride and float on the surface when you want it there, but it’s still a practical shape for slim, light nymphs.
What to tie with it
Use it for standard dry flies and attractor dries, especially when you’re tying small profiles like tiny Tricos. It also fits light nymph work like Pheasant Tails and soft hackles when you want to fish them subsurface on a dry-style hook, plus stonefly nymphs and lightweight streamers in smaller, wide-gap proportions. If you tie parachutes, it’s a good platform for adding a post, and you can also build in trailing shucks or spent wings on spinner-style dries.
Flies and the fish they're for
Tie Trico patterns on it for technical trout fishing on tailwaters and spring creeks when fish are keyed on tiny mayflies and spinners on the surface. It also works for Stonefly Nymph patterns for trout and steelhead-style nymphing in rivers where stoneflies are a staple subsurface food source. Because it crosses over between dry flies and light nymphs, it’s a handy hook when you want the same basic hook style to cover both topwater trout eats and lighter subsurface presentations.
How it compares
Compared to the Umpqua XC 230BL-BN Dry/Nymph hooks, the C1180 is barbless and uses a return point, but it’s offered in fewer sizes.
