What it is
Hareline Crystal Tails are pre-tapered flash tails built on a thread core. They’re made from flash fibers, so they stay bright in the water, move with a realistic wiggle, and keep a natural taper without absorbing much water. The thread core adds durability so the tail holds its shape and doesn’t foul as easily.
What to tie with it
Use them as ready-made tails on streamers and on poppers when you want a larger profile without stacking a bunch of separate flash strands. They also work well when you’re trying to keep your tying simple and consistent from fly to fly: tie in by the core, set your length, and you’re done.
Flies and the fish they're for
Crystal Tails show up naturally in simple high-water patterns like Ken Walrath’s Crystal Worm, which gets fished for trout in swollen rivers and muddy runoff edges. They also fit right into proven streamer staples like the Crystal Bugger (a Woolly Bugger variation), a go-to for trout in rivers and lakes and for smallmouth in moving water when you want extra flash and motion.
How it compares
They’re similar to Mangum’s Original Dragon Tails in that both have a thread core and a built-in taper. The difference is that Crystal Tails are all-flash, while Dragon Tails are a non-flash synthetic tail material.
