The waxed finish helps it bite into materials, and it lays flat and wraps smoothly when you control your bobbin tension. It’s a strong thread with solid material-holding power, which matters when you’re cinching down hair, synthetics, or bulky stacks on bigger hooks.
What to tie with it
Use it anywhere you want secure tie-ins and clean, flat thread bases on mid-sized to larger flies, especially streamers and big-bodied patterns. It’s a good choice for building durable heads, locking down dumbbell eyes, and securing wing materials without them spinning. With the wax, it also behaves well when you’re tightening down on slick materials on bass and saltwater flies.
Flies and the fish they're for
Danville 140-denier is commonly put to work on wet flies and streamers in the typical #10 through #2 range, where you want strength without thread that feels like rope. It’s also a natural fit for bass “junk” patterns and other streamer-style flies that get stripped for largemouth and smallmouth in lakes and rivers. On the salt side, 140-denier thread shows up a lot on medium saltwater patterns where you’ve got room for a little bulk and you need thread strength for repeated casting and tough mouths, like flies aimed at redfish, snook, and striped bass.
