What it is
Hareline Double Barrel Popper Bodies are double barrel popper bodies made from durable foam. They’re built to take abuse and they come with recessed eye holes, so adding eyes and keeping the profile clean is straightforward. On the water they’re meant to push water and make surface disturbance, with a shape that also lends itself to diver-style flies.
What to tie with it
Tie them as poppers and divers by lashing the foam body to a shank and building your tail and collar behind it, then finish the head with eyes in the recessed sockets. They’re a natural fit for Sneaky Petes and mouse-style flies where you want a loud, floating head and a defined front end. If you like adding your own look, these foam bodies also take sprayed-on patterning through mesh sheets.
Flies and the fish they're for
Sneaky Pete-style surface flies tied on these bodies are a classic choice for largemouth and smallmouth bass on ponds, lakes, and rivers when you want a big surface meal with a wake and a pop. In larger sizes, this same style of foam-headed predator fly crosses over well to pike and musky in freshwater, and stripers and redfish in salt and brackish water. The general “big surface popper/diver” profile is also right at home for other big-game predators that eat large topwater offerings, including sailfish when rigged appropriately for bluewater.
How it compares
Compared to Howitzer’s Baitfish Popper Heads, the cupped face is similar, but the Double Barrel shape can’t be reversed for diver tying.
