What it is

Hareline Dyed Deer Body Hair is dyed deer body hair from soft-tanned deer hide. It’s durable, stacks cleanly for even tips, and it spins readily when you want a packed, flared hair body. On the water it rides high when used in buoyant dry-fly and spun-hair work, and it stays tough enough for fish that chew.

What to tie with it

Spin it and pack it for clipped heads and full bodies on bugs, divers, and caddis-style patterns, or stack it for neat-tip wings and tails. It also works well for Comparadun-style wings where you want hair that flares just enough to stand up and support the fly. For streamers, it’s a solid choice when you need a durable hair wing or collar and want the material to behave predictably at the stacker.

Flies and the fish they're for

Spun deer hair bodies show up in classic bass bugs that get fished for largemouth and smallmouth in ponds, rivers, and lakes, especially around cover. Deer hair is also used for Muddler Minnow-style spun heads, a staple for trout in rivers and for smallmouth in moving water when you’re imitating baitfish or sculpins. As a dry-fly material, deer body hair is commonly used for Comparaduns and the Goddard Caddis, both fished for trout on rivers and spring creeks when fish are keyed on mayflies or skating caddis. Deer hair tips are also a standard dry-fly tail material on Wulff-style and Humpy-style dries for trout in fast water where a buoyant, durable fly matters.
