What it is
Hareline Ephemera Pure Silk Thread is a pure silk fly tying thread that lays thin on the hook but still stands up to tension. It handles easily at the bench, with a shiny look and consistent dye from spool to spool.
What to tie with it
Use it for slim, clean wet-fly bodies and especially for North Country spider bodies where you want a fine thread body with that silk sheen. It’s also right at home in classic salmon fly tying, whether you’re dressing them by hand or on a vise, because you can pull on it hard without it snapping. Outside of flies, it’s a traditional choice for rod guide wraps on bamboo and fiberglass rods, including snake and agate guides.
Flies and the fish they're for
North Country Spider patterns are the natural match for this thread, since the body is often nothing more than silk thread with a sparse hackle over it. Fish them wet for trout and grayling in rivers and streams, swung or lifted in the current. That same silk-thread-body approach carries over to other classic wet fly fishing where you’re targeting trout in moving water and want a slim, lively fly.
How it compares
Tyers use it as a substitute for Pearsall’s when they want a stand-alone silk thread for spiders, with good flexibility and enough resistance to really snug it down without breaking.
