What it is
Hareline Estaz Medium is a mylar chenille built on a core with mylar wrapped around it. On the hook it gives you a translucent, reflective body with plenty of flash, and it holds up well. Those fibers also kick and pulse a bit in the water, so even a simple wrap has some movement.
What to tie with it
Use it as a straight body wrap on streamers, steelhead patterns, and saltwater flies, or palmer it like chenille to build a thicker profile fast. It’s also a go-to for egg-style flies where you want a round, glowy “yarn ball” look without a lot of steps, and it shows up in blob-style patterns for added presence.
Flies and the fish they're for
Russ Madden’s Circus Peanuts uses Estaz for that bright, attention-grabbing body and is fished for trout in rivers and tailwaters when you want a flashy attractor/buggy profile. Estaz Egg patterns are a common way to cover spawning runs, fished for trout and steelhead in rivers where eggs are a key food source. In saltwater patterns, Estaz is often wrapped into the body to add flash and motion for species like redfish and seatrout over flats and along shorelines.
