What it is
Hareline Fino Skin is a very thin, transparent, elastic fly-tying skin cut from a plastic sheet with a paper backing. It stretches and conforms as you wrap it, so it lays smooth over dubbing or underbodies without getting bulky. In the water it keeps that slim, glossy “shell” look that reads like a natural back or casing.
What to tie with it
Use it for wingcases and backs on nymphs by pulling it over the top of a dubbed thorax and tying it down at the front, then trimming. It also wraps easily for slim nymph bodies and segmented bodies, and it’s right at home as a scud back or shrimp back when you want a translucent shell layer over your body material.
Flies and the fish they're for
Tied as a scud back on small freshwater crustacean patterns, it’s a natural fit for trout in tailwaters and spring creeks where scuds are a steady food source. Worked as a shrimp back on shrimp-style flies, it crosses over to the salt for redfish and bonefish on flats where a translucent shellback sells the profile. As a wingcase material on mayfly and stonefly nymph patterns, it’s commonly used for trout and also for smallmouth when they’re keyed on drifting nymphs in rivers.
