What it is

Hareline Fish Skull Chocklett’s Body Tubing is a synthetic fly-tying body tubing you wrap on the hook shank. It builds a segmented look and gives the illusion of bulk without actually stacking up a ton of material. When you use it up front as a head, it forms a shape that pushes water.

What to tie with it

Wrap it as a low-bulk body over a hook shank to make segmented fly bodies, especially on streamers where you want shape without weight. You can also use it to form streamer heads and larger musky-style heads, and it crosses over into trout patterns for segmented bodies. It’s also used to build crab bodies, and some tyers use it as a spreader in steelhead and salmon flies.

Flies and the fish they're for

The Alphlexo Crab uses body tubing to help form the crab body, and it’s the kind of fly you fish for saltwater species like redfish on flats and along marsh edges. The Body Tubing BULKhead is a streamer concept built around the tubing up front to make a head that pushes water, which fits right in for predators like musky in freshwater and also big river trout when you want a pronounced head and profile.

How it compares

It’s compared directly to Bill’s Body Braid, but it’s a different structure with a different tying method, so you’ll handle and build bodies and heads differently even if the goal is similar.
