What it is
Hareline Fish Skull Faux Bucktail is a synthetic bucktail substitute made from solid synthetic fibres. It has a bucktail-like look and feel, with long fibres that are very consistent in length and come with a built-in taper. In the water it’s fast sinking, it holds up well, and it’s resistant to damage from toothy fish.
What to tie with it
Use it anywhere you’d reach for bucktail: streamer wings and tails, and as a stiff tail or under-tail to support softer materials like bunny strips, ostrich herl, or saddle hackle. It also works for bodies, including quill-wrapped bodies, nymph bodies, and even dry fly bodies, plus nymph wing cases. Because the fibres are solid and non-flaring, it’s great when you want a clean, controlled profile rather than a tied-in section that pushes and blooms.
Flies and the fish they're for
Clouser Minnows and Deceivers tied with Faux Bucktail are staples for baitfish profiles for smallmouth and largemouth bass in rivers and lakes, stripers in rivers and along beaches, and saltwater fish like redfish in the flats. It also shows up in nymph standards like the Hare’s Ear, a go-to for trout in freestones and tailwaters. Bulk Head Hollow Feyes and other bucktail-style baitfish patterns are commonly aimed at larger predators like striped bass and other toothy fish where durability matters, and Faux Bucktail Flatwing-style builds are right at home for stripers and coastal predators. Tiers also use it for Atlantic salmon winging on patterns like the Blue Charm and White Wing Blue Charm.
How it compares
Compared with natural bucktail, it keeps a similar look, feel, and taper, but it’s more uniform and consistent in length. The tradeoff is that it won’t flare like natural hollow bucktail, which limits it for patterns and techniques that rely on flare, including Bulk Head Hollow Feyes-style builds.
