What it is
Hareline Flat Diamond Braid is a Mylar braid made into a thin, flat ribbon you wrap as a body material or use as built-in flash. Because it lays flat it’s easy to control and tie in without wanting to spin or slip around the shank, and it builds a smooth, durable finish. If you tease it out after tying, it kicks off extra flash.
What to tie with it
Wrap it like tinsel to form slim bodies over a thread base, or stack wraps to build a clean, even body on streamers, tube flies, steelhead patterns, and saltwater flies. You can shape it into tapered baitfish bodies by changing your underbody and wrap spacing. It also works for a picked-out flashy tail effect, and as a flashback on nymphs.
Flies and the fish they're for
On flats standards like the Gotcha and Crazy Charlie, Flat Diamond Braid is a go-to body wrap for bonefish in places like the Bahamas. It also shows up on patterns like Craven’s Bonefish Junk for bonefish on shallow sand and turtle grass. For freshwater and anadromous looks, it makes a tough, bright body on a Zonker for trout and on baitfish-style streamers, and it fits the long, sleek profile of a Flatwing for striped bass and other saltwater predators.
How it compares
Compared to Hareline Diamond Braid, this version is a flat ribbon, while Diamond Braid is closer to a round braided rope (about 1/16 inch) that naturally lends itself to more segmented bodies. Flat Diamond Braid (about 1 inch wide as a ribbon) is the pick when you want a smoother, flatter body profile.
