What it is

Hareline Flat-End Tungsten Hour Glass Eyes are flat-end hourglass eyes made from tungsten. They’re very heavy for their size, so they sink a fly fast and help it track hook-point-up with a jigging motion. The flat center stem and flat ends sit solid on the hook shank and give you a clean surface for sticking on 3D or adhesive eyes.

What to tie with it

Use them as the main weight up front on streamers to build a baitfish head and set the fly’s balance so it jigs on the strip. They’re right at home on shrimp, sculpin, crab, and crayfish patterns where you want the fly to ride correctly and get down quickly. A common bench move is lashing them in tight with strong thread and then locking them in with a bomb-proof figure-eight wrap and finish.

Flies and the fish they're for

The Clouser Minnow is a classic place for tungsten hourglass eyes, both for the baitfish look and to make the fly dive and jig. Fished in freshwater, it’s a go-to for smallmouth and largemouth bass in rivers and lakes, and it’ll also get eaten by trout when they’re chasing minnows. In saltwater, the same weighted Clouser profile is commonly used for striped bass and inshore species like redfish when you need a fast-sinking, jigging presentation.

How it compares

Compared to typical hourglass eyes, these are heavier and more versatile because the flat stem and flat ends give you a more stable mount and a better platform for stick-on eyes. Versus Hareline Heavy Lead Eyes, tungsten gets you more weight for the size, and you still keep the flat stem and flat ends that lead versions don’t have.
