What it is
Hareline Flat Mylar is a flat mylar tinsel with a two-tone reflective finish. It wraps smooth and lies flat on the shank, and it holds up well thanks to being durable, corrosion-resistant, and tarnish-resistant. In the water it reads as clean, hard flash rather than bulk.
What to tie with it
Wrap it as a smooth body, or use it for quick shank coverage when you want an even, bright base fast. It’s a natural fit for flashback nymph backs and slim midge bodies, and it also works as ribbing or as accent strips in streamers and wet flies. On saltwater patterns it’s an easy way to add flash without worrying about corrosion.
Flies and the fish they're for
Black-nosed Dace uses mylar in the body to give that bright baitfish sheen, and it’s fished as a classic trout and landlocked salmon streamer in rivers and lakes, and it’ll also take smallmouth in moving water. Muddler Minnow often gets mylar accents for extra flash, and it’s a go-to for trout in streams and lakes when you’re imitating sculpins, small baitfish, or waking a pattern in low light. The same flat mylar body-and-accent idea carries over to saltwater streamers where you’re fishing for species like stripers in the surf or bays.
How it compares
Compared to traditional tinsel that can tarnish or corrode, mylar stays shiny and resists corrosion. The two-tone design also cuts down on how many different spools you need to get a contrasting flash effect.
