What it is
The Hareline Gamakatsu SL12S Big Game Blue Water Hook is a saltwater fly hook built on 1X heavy Gamakatsu wire with a tin-plated finish. It has a wide gap and the heavy wire gives you the strength you want when a big fish turns on the fly. The tin plating adds corrosion resistance for salt use.
What to tie with it
This is a go-to platform for large-pattern tying where you need a stout hook and solid hookups, especially bulky profiles that benefit from a wide gap. Use it for saltwater gamefish patterns and for freshwater predator flies when you want heavy-wire insurance. It’s also commonly chosen for tarpon-style flies, including short-shank builds.
Flies and the fish they're for
The SL12S is widely used for tying tarpon flies, where hook strength matters for hard mouths and long fights in coastal bays, channels, and flats. It’s also intended for big-game saltwater patterns aimed at billfish and other offshore predators. On the freshwater side, it crosses over well to oversized predator flies when you’re tying big profiles and don’t want the hook to open up under pressure.
