What it is

Hareline Gritty Tungsten Beads are fly-tying beads made from high-density tungsten for getting a fly down fast. They have a gritty texture and a durable finish, and the slotted design makes them easy to seat on jig hooks. In the water they help keep the fly tracking deep and close to the bottom.

What to tie with it

Use them up front as a bead head to add weight and help your fly sink quickly on nymphs and streamers. They’re a natural fit for jig-style nymphs where you slide the slotted bead onto the hook before you start your thread work, then build a collar behind it to lock everything in place. That gritty texture also pairs well with a little thread pressure when you want the bead to stay put and not spin.

Flies and the fish they're for

These beads are made for beadhead nymphs and jig nymphs you fish tight to the bottom for trout in rivers, especially when you need to tick rocks and stay in the strike zone. They also make sense on weighted streamer setups for trout and smallmouth when you want the fly to sink and track deeper in current. On jig hooks, they’re commonly used for nymphing tactics where you’re trying to maintain contact and keep the fly down through the drift.

How it compares

Because they’re tungsten, they sink faster than brass beads and faster than lead beads, which helps keep flies deeper with less “bounce” in the drift.
