What it is
Hareline Hen Cape is a full cape of hen feathers with flexible stems and webby fibers. Those softer, webby feathers move and breathe in the water, and the wide size range lets you match anything from small wets up through bigger collars and winging.
What to tie with it
Use it for soft hackle collars on wets, nymphs, and traditional spiders by palmering or wrapping a single feather as a collar. It’s also a go-to for dry-fly wings, plus nymph tails and legs when you want a softer, more natural profile. Feather Game Changer patterns use hen for body and movement, and they’re fished as baitfish and swimming prey for species like largemouth and smallmouth bass in lakes and rivers, and for trout where larger streamers are a play. Hen feathers are also commonly used on traditional mayfly dry flies like the Adams as wings, which is a staple trout pattern on rivers and spring creeks. Soft hackles tied with hen are classic trout flies for swinging or dead-drifting in riffles and runs, and they also take panfish readily in ponds and creeks.
