What it is

Hareline Hook & Hackle Pliers are compact, lightweight pliers for grabbing materials at the vise and giving you a controlled handle while you wrap. The jaws are silicone-coated, so they grip securely without slipping and are less likely to nick or crush delicate feathers. They’re ergonomic in the hand and built to hold up to regular tying.

What to tie with it

Use them to wrap hackle when you’re building dry-fly collars, especially on small hooks where finger-wrapping gets cramped. They also shine for wrapping other tying materials like fine wire ribbing and tinsel, and for holding delicate materials steady while you position and tie them in. The non-slip jaws help you keep tension even as you make tight, controlled turns.

Flies and the fish they're for

On small dry flies, these pliers help you wrap a neat, upright hackle collar that’s central to fishing classic mayfly and caddis dries for trout on rivers and spring creeks. They’re also handy when you’re ribbing nymphs with fine wire, which shows up on patterns like the Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear and Pheasant Tail Nymph for trout and grayling in freestone rivers and tailwaters. When you move up in size to big streamers or salmon flies where materials get tougher and wraps get longer, having a secure grip tool keeps the wrap controlled for fish like salmon and large predatory trout.

How it compares

Compared to uncoated jaws, the silicone-coated jaws slip less and do less damage to delicate materials. Against higher-priced tools, they’re positioned as budget-friendly while offering similar on-the-bench performance.
