What it is
Hareline Hook Holder Tubing is a durable, easy-to-use tubing meant to grip a hook securely. At the bench it’s used as a simple “sleeve” that holds the hook in place when you’re building tube-style patterns or rigging a trailing hook.
What to tie with it
Use it as a hook holder and short rear body section on tube flies, seating the hook so it tracks straight and stays put. The usual move is to cut a short section, slide it onto the back of the tube, then insert the hook eye into the tubing to set hook position before fishing.
Flies and the fish they're for
Hook holder tubing shows up in tube-fly rigs where you want a trailing hook, especially for anadromous fish like steelhead and salmon in rivers. It’s also a common approach on saltwater-style tube or shank-based streamer rigs where you fish a short-shank hook behind the dressing for species like striped bass and redfish in current and around structure. In all those cases, the tubing’s job is simple: keep the hook secure while letting you separate hook choice and hook placement from the dressed portion of the fly.
