What it is

Hareline Hump Back Glass Beads are asymmetrical glass beads with a hump-backed profile that sits on the hook like a built-in “bubble.” Being glass, they’re translucent with a glow-through effect and they hold up well, while staying lighter than a comparable metal bead.

What to tie with it

Use them as a bead head when you want the look of a bubble and a little presence without as much weight as metal. They also work well slid onto a shank to build segmented bodies for scuds, midges, caddis larvae, and other nymph-style patterns, especially attractor-leaning ties where that translucent “air” look is part of the trigger.

Flies and the fish they're for

These beads show up on glass bead spider/midge-style subsurface flies that are fished to cruising trout and char when they’re keying on tiny midges and other small drifting critters in lakes and slow water. They’re also used on Killer Caddis-style patterns and other caddis-larva imitations for trout in rivers and tailwaters, where the hump-backed “bubble” profile sells that trapped-air look in the drift. When you tie them into emerger-style patterns, they’re a good fit for trout that are feeding just under the surface and will shy off heavier, faster-sinking flies.

How it compares

Compared to metal beads, these are lighter while still durable, so you can keep the fly higher in the column. Compared to more symmetrical glass beads like D’s Flyes Tyer Glass Beads, the key difference is the hump-backed, asymmetrical shape, while both share that translucent, durable glass look.
