What it is
Hareline Ice Fur is a synthetic fly-tying hair fiber with flash built right into the fibers. The crinkled texture gives it natural movement and a slight sparkle that shows up as it reflects in the water. It sheds water quickly and it builds volume fast on the hook without needing much material.
What to tie with it
Use it for shucks on trailing shuck and emerger patterns, including wet fly shucks, by tying in a short sparse clump and teasing it out to length. For streamers, it works as a wing, tail, or body material and is easy to stack, blend, and trim for baitfish profiles. It also fits right into saltwater-style tying for crab and shrimp patterns where you want bulk and motion without a heavy soak.
Flies and the fish they're for
In baitfish imitations tied with Ice Fur wings and tails, you’re usually targeting trout and smallmouth in rivers, and also stripers and redfish when those same minnow shapes get tied larger for coastal water. In shrimp and crab patterns built from Ice Fur, the natural movement and flash are aimed at redfish and other flats feeders in salt water, and they’ll also cross over to inshore species that key on small crustaceans. As trailing shucks and emerger shucks, it’s a trout material for rivers and tailwaters where fish are eating mayfly and caddis emergers just under the film.
How it compares
It overlaps with Enrico Puglisi EP Fibers for a lot of the same streamer and saltwater applications, but Ice Fur shows more sparkle in the finished fly.
