What it is
Hareline Ice Wing Fiber is a flash tying fiber made from fine synthetic strands. The fibers are limp, very fine in diameter, and run about 8 inches long, so they move easily and add flash without a stiff, broomy look.
What to tie with it
Use it anywhere you want subtle-to-obvious flash in a streamer wing or along a streamer body, either blended with other materials or layered as a topping. It also works well in a dubbing loop to make a flashy brush, and the fine diameter makes it easy to wrap or tie in for nymph and emerger bodies and thoraxes.
Flies and the fish they're for
Hollow Fleye-style patterns commonly show up in saltwater and nearshore baitfish work for striped bass, bluefish, and false albacore, and Ice Wing Fiber fits right in for adding flash through the wing while keeping the profile light and mobile. Dave Skok’s Mushmouth Fly is a striped bass baitfish pattern for rips, beaches, and estuaries, and this material is a natural match when you want flash in the wing without adding bulk. The same fibers also translate cleanly to freshwater nymphs and emergers when you’re tying for trout and want a little shine in a slim body or thorax.
How it compares
Compared to many other flash materials, Ice Wing Fiber is finer in diameter and more limp, so it lays and swims softer. It’s similar to Larva Lace Angel Hair in being a thin flash fiber in the 6–8 inch range and is often interchangeable, but the available options differ between the two lines.
