What it is
Hareline Iridescent Black Schlappen is a schlappen feather with webby fibers and a natural iridescent sheen. Those webby fibers breathe and flow in the water, and when you stack and wrap it you can build a surprisingly dense profile. It’s also straightforward to handle at the vise, whether you’re tying it in as a feather or working it like a soft, mobile hackle.
What to tie with it
Use it for long streamer tails, sweeping collars, and bulky, dense heads where you want movement without a bunch of separate materials. It also works well palmered up a body to add longer, webby fibers and extra motion, and you can control the fiber angle by wetting your fingers and sweeping the fibers back to the sides as you tie. It shows up a lot in big-profile work like musky and pike flies, but it scales down cleanly for smaller saltwater patterns and for muddy-water silhouettes.
Flies and the fish they're for
Semper Fleye uses schlappen to build a pulsing profile that’s commonly fished for striped bass in the surf and estuaries, and it also crosses over well to inshore saltwater fish like redfish. Feather Game Changer-style flies lean on flowing feathers to create that articulated “swim,” making them a natural fit for pike and musky, and they also get tied and fished for largemouth and smallmouth bass in lakes and rivers where a big meal gets noticed. With its dark, sheeny look and webby movement, this schlappen is at home in off-color water presentations where you want the fly to push presence and still look alive.
How it compares
Compared to Hareline Rooster Schlappen, it’s a similar webby feather for the same general jobs, but it lacks the dark natural sheen and coloration you get with this iridescent schlappen.
