What it is
Hareline Kiley’s Stone Skinz are pre-cut fly-tying sheets meant to wrap and form realistic stonefly nymph bodies. The material is ultra-thin, flexible, and durable, with a detailed segmented texture that reads like an exoskeleton once it’s on the hook. It’s also UV- and fade-resistant, so the look holds up over time.
What to tie with it
Use it as a body wrap for stonefly nymphs or as an exoskeleton-style shellback over a dubbed or underwrapped body, then lock it down at the thorax and head. Because it comes pre-cut, you can go straight to wrapping, folding, and ribbing rather than spending time cutting and shaping your own shell material.
Flies and the fish they're for
This is aimed squarely at stonefly nymph imitations, which are staple patterns for trout in rivers anywhere stoneflies are present, especially in freestone and tailwater systems. In that role it’s fished dead-drifted along the bottom for trout, and it also fits the larger nymph profile that gets eaten by big browns when they’re keying on stoneflies.
How it compares
Compared with more traditional shellback/body materials that require cutting and shaping, Stone Skinz saves that prep time by being pre-cut while still giving you a segmented, exoskeleton look.
