What it is
Hareline’s Kona BSS is a barbless, long-shank hook built on 1x strong, high-carbon steel wire. It’s a strong-wire, long profile that gives you good penetration and stays pinned thanks to the barbless design. The long shank also gives you room to build longer bodies and bigger heads without crowding the hook eye.
What to tie with it
Use it when you want an extended nymph or streamer silhouette: stonefly and other big nymph bodies, sculpin and crayfish profiles, and longer baitfish-style streamers. It’s a natural fit for competition-style tying where you want the point to pierce fast and hold securely, and it’s a solid platform for bulky wraps, dubbing bodies, and heavier streamer builds.
Flies and the fish they're for
Wooly Buggers are a classic match for this hook, and they cover a lot of water: trout in rivers and stillwaters, plus smallmouth bass in warmwater rivers and lakes. Tied bigger, that same Bugger profile also gets used as a sculpin or leech-style streamer for predatory trout where you need a deep-sinking, full-size meal. The long-shank shape also lines up with larger stonefly/hellgrammite/dragonfly nymph styles that are commonly fished for trout in freestone rivers during big-bug seasons.
How it compares
Compared with the Tiemco TMC 5262 Heavy Nymph and Streamer Hook, the BSS is 1x strong while the 5262 is 2x strong. The 5262 also runs a wider size range and is generally the more versatile option when you want heavier wire across more hook sizes.
