What it is
Hareline Krystal Hackle is a synthetic flash hackle built on a thread core, with synthetic fibers tied in along one side. It’s flashy, wraps cleanly, and in the water those fibers pulse and swim with very little effort. Compared to stiffer flash brushes, it stays straighter and softer so you get more flow than “spine.”
What to tie with it
Wrap it like a chenille to build bodies, or palmer it up the shank for a full-on flashy body with movement. It’s also handy as a collar up front on small-bodied streamers, or built into heads where you want extra shimmer without adding bulk. Because it isn’t as stiff, you can also use it as a prop to help longer, flowing fibers stand off the hook a bit and keep shape.
Flies and the fish they're for
Krystal Flash soft hackles (Krystal Flash body with a partridge hackle) are a good match for trout in rivers and tailwaters when you need a wet fly that shows up in faster or deeper runs. A Krystal Bugger is a flashier Woolly Bugger style streamer, commonly fished for trout in streams and stillwaters, and it also crosses over well to smallmouth in rivers. Krystal Flash is also often used as a small accent in CDC-and-hackle midge dries for trout when you want a tiny dry with a little glint on calm water.
How it compares
Chocklett’s Filler Flash is stiffer and more crinkled, so it does a better job propping up limp fibers; Krystal Hackle stays less stiff and straighter for boosting flash and flow. If you’re looking at Chocklett’s Filler Flash as an alternative to Krystal Flash Chenille, think of it as the more supportive option when you want structure more than softness.
