What it is
Hareline Magic Quills is a synthetic quill body material made to be wrapped to form a clean, segmented abdomen. It’s translucent and waterproof, so the underbody shows through and helps you control the final look without the material getting waterlogged. At the vise it’s easy to handle and lays down a smooth segmented wrap.
What to tie with it
Use it anywhere you want a crisp segmented body: nymphs, emergers, dries, midges, and pupae, including Euro and Czech nymph styles. Typical use is building a slim underbody and then wrapping the quill in touching or slightly spaced turns to create segmentation, then finishing it off at the thorax. It also works well on small hooks when you need segmentation without bulk.
Flies and the fish they're for
Perdigons are a natural fit for Magic Quills, since that segmented abdomen is a big part of the profile; they’re fished as Euro nymphs for trout in rivers and streams, and they also work under an indicator. The same segmented-body approach crosses over to buzzer-style midge pupae, which are staple trout flies on lakes during winter conditions. Because it will make a neat quill-style abdomen, it also shows up in quill-bodied mayfly dries like Quill Gordons and Blue Quills, which are classic trout patterns during mayfly hatches on moving water.
How it compares
Compared with Hareline Tapered Synthetic Quills, Magic Quills don’t rely on a tapered center strip that increases segment size toward the front; the tapered version is built specifically to make the forward segments grow as you wrap.
