What it is

Hareline Marabou Strung Blood Quills are strung marabou feathers with a thin stem and a shorter overall feather length. On the hook they build a fuller profile than longer-select plumes, and in the water the fibers breathe and pulse with very little movement. That thin stem also makes it easy to wrap.

What to tie with it

Use it for streamer and leech tails, and for wings on smaller to medium streamers when you want a soft, mobile silhouette. It’s also right at home on swimming nymph tails, damselfly nymph bodies, and as gills and thorax material where you want that “alive” look. The big bench move with blood quills is palmering it as hackle for bushy flies and collar work.

Flies and the fish they're for

Woolly Buggers tied with blood quill marabou are a staple for trout in rivers and stillwaters, and they also cross over to smallmouth in warmwater. Cat Eyed Boobies use marabou wings for stillwater trout, especially when you’re fishing intermediate or sinking lines. Galloup’s Barely Legal leans on marabou movement for big trout on streamer water, and Intruders put marabou to work for steelhead and salmon in swinging and downstream presentations. Gotchas are a flats fly for bonefish, and while marabou isn’t the signature look of that pattern, it shows up as a soft, mobile accent in some ties.

How it compares

Compared to Hareline Extra Select Marabou Feathers, these blood quills have a thinner stem, run shorter, and tie in with a fuller profile, which is why they’re nicer for palmering and short, bushy flies. Extra Select is the pick when you specifically want extra fiber length and long barbs for longer strips.
